Harbour Road (Thury Harcourt) and Marsh Road
In 2021 or 22, EDDC’s members decided to close the Thury Harcourt toilets as part of cost-cutting measures, indicating staying open until the end of holiday season 2024. The Marsh Road facility had already been shut down. Recognising the community's will to keep these essential amenities open, the Seaton Chamber stepped in to find a solution. Throughout late 2023 and early 2024, the Chamber engaged in discussions on how to achieve this goal. Unfortunately, these negotiations slipped due to the Chamber's recent establishment and the complexities involved.
Despite this recent setback and EDDC reopening the bids shortly, the Chamber has now secured assistance from local businesses and individuals willing to help us financially and develop a clear strategy to enhance these facilities. We will shortly be asking the community to either join the Chamber or donate towards the cause. More details will follow soon as we work towards making Seaton more welcoming for visitors and residents.
The Chamber remains committed to collaborating with EDDC to keep the toilets open in Harbour Road and reopen them in Marsh Road. By working together, we aim to preserve and improve these vital amenities for the benefit of everyone in Seaton.
Update, July 2024:
This was our first project as the re-energised Chamber and we're still working away at a community Asset Transfer with EDDC. This means the Chamber could take on the toilets, becoming the leaseholders. EDDC want to see some clear finances from us, so we'll be launching a big project in the autumn to start raising the funds. We expect to need to raise around £50k so that we can transform the current buildings into modern and accessible toilets as well as create some space for a small enterprise. The income from this will keep these public facilities cost neutral in the long term. If there's anyone out there who might like to help the Chamber by writing funding bids we'd love to hear from you!
